The proportion of the elderly in the total population has shown a rising trend recently, which brings some pressure to the development of society and economy. This tendency, however, as a driving force, also creates new opportunities for the development of the profession and market related to the ageing industries. In recent years, in order to meet the needs of the elderly and to assist and support the family pension, the number of pension institutions is in the continuous increase, at the same time, the hardware facilities of nursing homes are upgrading and improving. Obviously, the favorable living environment provides the material basis for the elderly in nursing homes. However, lack of the residents-oriented service and ignorance of psychological care for the elderly residents can bring negative effects on the quality of life and happiness of nursing home residents, which leads to maladjustment to a nursing home by elderly residents. Because of relocation to a nursing home, the new environment totally different from that of their homes, it really takes elderly residents some time to adapt and transit. During this period, the elderly in nursing home will experience stressful events, depression, anxiety and discomfort of physical and mental reaction if they are disable to adapt to the nursing home, for example, failing to establish new interpersonal network, no sense of belongings and loss of meaningful roles and so on.Regarding the needs as well as the physical and mental health of the elderly as the core of professional services, the gerontological social work plays a very important role in mature service. Therefore, the professional social work with elderly people in nursing homes can not only help elderly residents solve the problems of maladjustment, but also enhance their ability of all aspects. For pension institutions, the gerontological social work, to a great extent, is favorable to the improvement of the quality of their services and optimization structure of human resources by providing professional training for their staff.Based on the above thinking, this article takes S pension institution in Nanjing as the research place.
