The ability to write well in English has gained increasing importance in one’s English proficiency. For one thing, written communication in English plays a role in international politics, economic trades as well as information exchange. For another, not only does it belong to a required highlight in the teaching syllabus of high school, but also it is a must in learning English. However, writing has always been a weak part in English learning for Chinese students. Because of the influence of exam-oriented education, writing has not gained the value it deserves. As a consequence of this, carrying studies on English writing can help teachers and students understand the weakness of writing and encourage them to work on it.Based on the linguistic input and output theories and comparative analysis theories, this thesis makes an effort to reveal sentence patterns used by high school students under given topics. In this thesis, the author has taken the students in Grade Two from Dangshan No.1 Middle School as the research subjects and chosen a total of 270 pieces of writings with 120 words or so written by these students during three examinations, each having 90 pieces. With the help of WORD and EXCEL software, the author has completed the tasks of categorizing, summarizing and data analyzing for the sample writings and finally determined the features of the most frequently used sentence patterns. By comparative analysis with the usage of native English writers, the author summarizes the deficiencies of Chinese students in sentence patters in English writing. For these deficiencies, the author analyzes the possible reasons and pedagogical implications, proposing corresponding solutions or suggestions in order to make the students more fluent and more idiomatic in written expressions in their English learning.
