A Confirmative Study Of Descriptors Pool Of Chinese Primary And Secondary School Students’ English Reading Proficieny

Reading proficiency plays an important role in language learning. Building a reading prificiency scale, providing guidance on language teaching, learning and evaluation of it, can effectively promote the development of the students’ English reading proficiency. To establish a national and reasonable pool of languge proficiency descriptors is a necessary condition to build a language proficiency scale. However, there is no pool of English languge proficiency descriptors designed for Chinese primary and secondary students. Therefore, it is very necessary to build such a kind of descriptors pool, during which empirical research is essential to ensure it is scientific, reasonable and practical.This study has collected 512 teachers’opinions on dimensions of English reading proficiency, on the base of which the author has tested the validity of the original descriptors pool and analyzed the dimensions of English reading proficiency by chi-square test. Besides, we have verified the reliability of the original descriptors pool through descriptive statistical analysis of teachers’ opinions on grading descriptors, using both quantitative and qualitative analysis methods of to find out the advantages and problems of it. At the same time, this paper has managed to point out the reasons by analyzing empirical findings and consulting revelant literatures. On this basis, the author has given some revising suggestions to constantly improve the original descriptiors pool, making necessary preparation for building an English reading proficiency scale of Chinese primary and secondary school students.
