In the early 1970s, in order to control the rapid growth of population, the State began to vigorously implement the family planning policy. Since then, this policy has been a basic national policy in China. Lots of families actively responded to the call of the policy and gave birth to only one child, which led to the appearance of "one-child family". With the rapid development of society, various kinds of risk factors have continuously increased in modern society. Diseases, accidents, and natural disasters make individual death unpredictable and unavoidable. In the one-child families, the unexpected death of their only child made these parents helpless. In recent years, the number of families which have lost their only child has gradually extended. Their problems have become a public topic and these parents also are the target groups that need to be given special attention by social policy system.Psychology emphasizes that cognition determinates behavior, which means that individual social cognition plays a very important regulatory role for the behavior. For most parents who have lost their only child, compared with physical, material and pension difficulties, what makes them hard to endure is mental torture without hopes. After losing the only child, their internal attitudes have been changed, and their views about the surroundings also have been greatly changed. These transformed perceptions will lead to some significantly different behaviors compared to before. This paper analyzes the changes of their social cognition from the perspective of social cognition by taking a case study on 15 persons in YS County of Hubei Province for example and using interviews method. Based on the social cognitive theory, this research theoretically constructs a specific set of dimensions and indicators on the parents who have lost their only child, and focuses on describing and analyzing the changes of their cognitive performance in the self, others, interpersonal relationship, community relationship, and social roles. There are three stages in the social cognitive transformation process for the parents who have lost their only child:the occurrence of the "lost only child" incident, the psychological rejection, and the gradual shift of social cognitive. Their social cognition demonstrates serious disorder and irrationality. Therefore, for the changed social cognitive consequences, we can help them to look for the presence of spiritual supports and a sense of belonging from changing their social cognitive, so that they could take courage to face reality and rediscover the value of life. This also helps them to take up a positive and healthy attitude to start a new life.
