The Study On Co-Supervisor’s Role Of Full-Time Master Of Engineering

In 2009, China start the full-time professional master’s training work including master of engineering, in response to meet the economic and social demands for high-level applied talents, change the situation of single degree type, and realize the degree system’s internationalization. In order to highlight the practice guidance and protect the education’s quality of the full-time master of engineering, the ministry of education required that the cultivation of the full-time master of engineering needs the co-supervisor. Since then, some relevant policies have enacted and implemented. But for various reasons, the practice of co-supervisor is not ideal.This research explore the ideal and realistic roles of the co-supervisor, from the theoretical perspective of role theory, and taking the example of full-time master of engineering in Southeast University. Based on this, this research puts forward the suggestion about how to realize the ideality. This study has found the following points:(1) Co-supervisor is carrying a lot of expectations. Among them, the students and supervisors have both similar and different expectations in the quality requirements, role duties and role relationship.(2) The practice of co-supervisor is mixed, the effect is not ideal, and there is a big gap between reality and ideal.(3) The gap is caused by both the individual and organizational factors. The individual factors include the supervisor’ own factors, co-supervisor own factors and students’ own factors; the organizational factors include the univerisities’ relevant managements and some measures from the enterprise providing the co-supervisor.(4) Finally, based on the above reasons, and some relevant experience from the foreign universities, provide some suggestion to implement the ideal role from the realization.
