With the popularity of mobile Internet and a large number of new data applications, such as mobile video, IPTV, wireless music, e-commerce and other business applications, the network traffic increases dramatically. As the result, the existing mobility management mechanisms have exposed many shortcomings. System bottlenecks and single point of failure caused by the central, hierarchical network structure are becoming the key issues hindering the network development. At the same time, the mobile network core is evolving towards a delayering and decentralization architecture, which makes the current mobility management mechanisms inefficient. In order to solve the problem caused by the central and hierarchical mobility management, a new mobility management mechanism suitable to lower gateway location, higher data transmission efficiency, flatter architecture, and no network anchor is needed in the future. This thesis designs and implements a distributed mobility management system based on the above considerations. Firstly, the general mobility management technologies are introduced, including the definition of the mobility management, the main research contents and methods. Current researches at the international standardization organizations about the mobility management are also analyzed. Some typical mobility management protocols are described, and compared with each other. In addition, the challenges and the main problems of the existing mobility management technologies are also analyzed and summarized. On the basis of the investigation and analysis, a Distributed Mobility Management (DMM) system is designed, which has a distributed management structure, centralized control plane, flat data plane, and efficient handoff process. The handoff latency and packets loss can also be reduced using the designed system. Moreover, a prototype of DMM is implemented based on Ubuntu System using C language. The functions and the performance of the DMM system have also been tested in the experimental network. The test results show that the implemented distributed mobility management system has good stability, terminal accessibility, better handoff performance, and better user experience. The implemented proxy also provides interoperability between the DMM system and the existing networks, and enables the smooth transition from legacy hosts to upgraded users and.
