Anhui Newspaper And New Thoughts During Late Qing And Early Republic Of China

During the period of Late Qing and early Republic of China,a large number of modernChinese newspapers rose.The community,especially advanced intellectuals recognized that theway to save the whole nationality is to widen people’s wisdom.They conducted the propaganda ofnew thoughts through running newspapers and tried to wake up the patriotic enthusiasm of peopleand even brought the whole of China’s awakening.Under the situation,Anhui newspapers had made a remarkable progress. At thattime,newspaper articles had mainly adapted to the development of time,including outsidenews,central and local government decree, the Western advanced technology and concepts andmethods to revive the economy.They aimed at enlightening the people and educating the public,sothat people could actively respond to the national crisis.Overall,the core issue of newspapers wasto spread all kinds of social thoughts.Therefore, the perspective of this paper is to research newideas of Anhui’s through newspapers,in order to fully examine the social mind,which may graspthe context of transition ofAnhui in the modern history.This paper has mainly quoted information from a dozen of modern newspapers,such as Anhuiofficial newspaper,Anhui vernacular newspaper,Slang Anhui Daily, Anhui Industry magazineand Anhui Academic Affairs magazine. The main part of the article discusses new political ideas,new economic ideas and new educational ideas.Among the three aspects,political ideas were aboutconcepts of the Western political system,which was related with advocating a combination ofindividual rights and obligations.Meanwhile,the community enjoyed the right of supervision bypublic opinion to the government.The introduction of foreign political systems made peoplegradually form the consciousness of modern state. Citizens enjoyed a certain freedom ofassociation and many political associations from a variety of cultural backgrounds had beestablished. In relation to the introduction concerning new economic trends, Anhui newspapersalso focused on the Western economic system and the management mode,while strengthening thepublic awareness of patent rights and encouraging people to adhere to recover mineral rights, topromote domestic products and revitalize livelihood. Education was also an important part of thethought transformation during the period of Late Qing and early Republic of China.Anhuinewspapers had made a more comprehensive preparation in consensus for the vocationaleducation and a more detailed record of the case of industrial schools.This article takes thoughts ofthe vocational education as the research object,which can best represent the characteristics of thereform of education,to reproduce the development of the vocational education ofAnhui.As an important medium of communicating and promoting new ideas,Anhui newspapersplayed a significant historical role in pushing forward the revolutionary process of history,andpromoting the dissemination of new ideas,becoming a powerful weapon against imperialism andauthoritarian.Anhui newspapers also improved Anhui modern knowledge systems,subverted thetraditional mode of thinking, took the responsibility of opening wisdom,created a more liberalpublic sphere and laid the foundation of the New Culture Movement later.
