Because of their fast measurement speed, non-contact operation and high precision,3D color fringeprojection techniques have been widely used in medical, industrial areas, military areas and the agriculturalsector. In recent years, with the continuous development of MEMS and expanding of its applications, it isbecoming more and more important to get their three-dimensional data with high accuracy. However, theexisting fringe projection measurement methods have the following problems: due to the lower fringecontrast, the three-dimensional measurement data obtained are inaccurate; lower measurement accuracybecause of inaccurate calibration method of optical system; small objects having large slopes and/ordiscontinuities cannot be measured.This paper will study how to measure small objects having large slopes and/or discontinuities. Thesoftware and hardware of a3D small field imaging system have been explored based on color fringeprojection. Experiments have been carried out. The main contents include: First, according to the size of themeasured object, a3D small field imaging system based on color fringe projection has been built up byputting a set of lens in front of a DLP (Digital Light Processing) projector. Then, using Visual C++6.0as abasic development tool, the software system have been programmed realize the functions of projecting,capturing and displaying of color fringe patterns, phase calculation, camera calibration, system calibrationand other functions. Finally, some experiments have been carried out to measure small objects having largeslopes and/or discontinuities by the develop3D imaging system. Experimental results verify the feasibilityand effectiveness of the3D system.
