With the rapid development of network, some hidden problems are gradually exposed. To improve the network security, stability and flexibility, the network controllability should be enhanced. Software Defined Network (SDN) is designed to decouple the routing plan and the data plan of network. This architecture will make it easier for administrators to develop control strategies for network, and then apply the control strategies to physical devices to achieve control of the entire network. On the other hand, the optical network develops rapidly. In order to.have a more efficient usage of spectrum resources, the flexible optical network attracts a lot of attention.The Combination of SDN and flexible optical network attracts a lot of attention. This thesis mainly research on the Software Defined Optical Network (SDON) control mechanism;The thesis analyses what can be controlled in flexible optical network, then find the optical APIs, the functions and optical devices to be controlled. The OpenFlow protocol is analysed and made an extention on optical network. The extended OpenFlow protocol is tested using hardware experiment.In addition, this thesis proposes Software Defined Path (SDP) architecture based on OpenFlow technique, to achieve optical layer optimization and control flexibility. The extension includes control information of tuning parameters including path selection, modulation format selection, and signal amplification and dispersion compensation. The devices to be used have not been realized. An experiment is done to demonstrate the optical optimization using SDP architecture. The main innovation of this paper is the. control mechanisms extension of SDN for flexible optical network. The concept of SDP is the other innovation of this paper. The research on extension of OpenFlow protocol and SDP control logic will achieve SDON.
