In the information globalization age, it is getting more and more important for theinformation communications inside enterprise and inter-cooperation. To ensure thesafety of information and separate the internal data from common business, enterprisesrequire building VPNs quickly. Traditionally, tunnel technology used to be adopted forthe data transportation of VPN over IP network, which brings about difficulties ofexpansion with the growth of the network scale, and it limits the development of VPN aswell. At this moment, the appearance of MPLS offers numerous solutions for VPN’sdevelopment and application. VPN over MPLS soon stands out and dominates the VPNmarketing. It has become a major research spot in VPN application field right now.This essay mainly studies the approach of designing and implementing layer3VPNover MPLS on aggregation Ethernet switch. For this purpose, paper starts with workingprinciples of MPLS, and discusses the advantages of MPLS in practical application. Onthis premise, it studies technologies employed in traditional IP VPN, and points outexisting flaws to put forward MPLS over VPN. This paper makes detailed research onwork procedure of control plane and data plane in layer3MPLS VPN, discussespractical application solutions of MPLS VPN. Finally, by comparing MPLS VPN withtraditional IP VPN technology, it concludes the merits and demerits at present.Based on the theoretical research, this paper analyzes functional requirements oflayer3MPLS VPN on aggregation Ethernet switch, and proposes the general realizationscheme. The function is divided into three part: MPLS VPN control module、BGPextension module and data switching module, which are designed and finally realized indetail. After MPLS VPN function being integrated into switch system, it designsexperiments to test and verify functions of MPLS VPN. Experimental results indicatethat this approach can successfully realize the function of layer3MPLS VPN.
