The medical image processing technology has been essential means for medical diagnosis in present. This technology involves many facets, and3D visualization of medical image is a very important technology. It involves many technologys, such as computer technology, image processing and biomedical engineering and so on. In recent years, medical image visualization plays a very important role in diagnosis, surgical simulation, radiation therapy, medical teaching and so on. However, visualization of medical image faces many difficulties and technical problems, which make it hardly to play a role in many practical applications. First, visualization demands a very large compution to deal with medical images; second, it has a real-time demand.Currently, the main ways to achieve HPC are using hight performance computers for large-scale parallel computing and using cluster system to compute. This paper focuses on four methods to achieve hight performance computing. The first one is the use of multi-threads for parallel computing; the second one is the use of MPI cluster to achieve hight performance computing; the third one is the use of CUDA and GPU to achieve hight performance computing; the last one is the combination of the two methods above, using multi-GPUs for hight performance computing.This paper focuses on using HPC to achieve ray-casting volume rendering algorithm. And medical image visualization can be faster and better than before. In this paper, through researching HPC technology and volume rendering algorithm, the hight-performance ray-casting volume rendering algorithm has been designed and implemented based on those four HPC methods. At last, we test this algorithm on the experimental platform and analysis the results. Experiment shows that, with hight performance computing technology, the volume rendering algorithm is more efficient. Also the algorithm’s result has very good quality.
