Academic libraries have always been playing a vital role in supporting theteaching, research and several other academic activities of its parent organization. However, these institutions are now facing organizational stress owing to the vastincrease in number of publications, especially serials, in various formats, advances ininformation technology and increase in the propensity to consume information byacademic community. The current situation necessitates the academic libraries toreengineer their traditional tools and work processes in order to make them moreproductive and effective. Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) has successfullybeen experimented in the business world for the revitalization of the organization. Theproper planning and implementation of BPR in "the core processes" of the librarywould eliminate duplication and unnecessary steps, which add no value to libraryprocesses, improve user satisfaction, minimize cost and deliver quality services.Library managers should adopt BPR in their organization’s portfolio of changemanagement strategies to lead their libraries into the future of continuing rapiddevelopments in information technology, continuing fiscal restraint, and continuingincrease in user expectations. The BPR in academic libraries must take into consideration the process ofcarrying out risk management in order to accomplish the primary goal of the proposedand wanted project. Therefore this paper focus on how to apply project riskmanagement for library administration of BPR project. Chapter2provides anoverview of the concept and classification of library risk, as well as the meaning andtype of library risk management.Chapter3analyzes the current situation of BPR in academic librarieswhich includes putting forward a comprehensive definition to BPR in academiclibraries and establishing the model of BPR based on the content of BPR. Based onthe advanced idea of project risk management in the domestic or foreign countries, ahierarchy model is built for BPR in academic libraries. Chapter4describes the basisof the project risk identification, gives out the risk factor list of BPR in academiclibraries based on the analysis of library risk. Chapter5describes the content, target and methods of the project risk analysis;gives the risk possibility analysis matrix, riskimpacting matrix and “Possibility-Impacting” analysis matrix for the BPR inacademic libraries using the method combined qualitative and quantitative. Aftersummarizing the risk assessment methods, elaborates on the procedure of BPR riskanalysis and assessment in academic libraries using the subjective evaluation method.Chapter6discusses the risk response measures of BPR in academic libraries. Chapter7summarizes the full text and points out the lack of research.
