In the field of network communications, in order to satisfy customers’ requirment onsupporting large amount of data service, operators have done much to improve theintegrated capability of their own transmission network, and customers have even higherdemand on QoS of the network, higher availability has become one of the most importantcharacteristics of today’s network. Link aggregation can increase the link bandwidth bybinding multiple physical ports into a logical port, while backup link mechanism have beenadopted to improve the reliability of the link between the equiment, and the cost can bedramatically saved. Link bandwidth expanding and connection reliability improvement canbe realized perfectly without upgrading of devices, so Link aggregation is a practicaltechnology of the data link layer. In order to solve the problems of the compatibility of linkaggregation among different manufacturers, currently the widely applied standard for linkaggregation is IEEE802.3ad protocol.In combination with the requiments of application the implementations of linkaggregation technology on the Linux system has been realized based on the theoreticalanalysis of link aggregation principle and IEEE802.3ad. Link aggregation is divided intotwo types of aggregation mode. They are static link aggregation and dynamic linkaggregation. The choice logic of reference port and the member ports of the aggregationgroup is described in the thesis. According to the modularization thought, the softwaredesign of link aggregation is given, it includes overall design and sub-module design. Thedesign of overall structure, function explain of sub-modules and their mutual relations areincluded in overall design. The design and implementation of the various sub-modules areincluded in sub-modules. Then the whole system were tested, and the results show that thelink aggregation function meet the test requirements, not only the system bandwidth hasbeen expanded, but also reliability and stability of the system have been enhanced.
