In recent years, with the rapid growth of broadband services such as video phone, IPTV,videoon demand, the global broadband access network is developed to warding higher rates continuously. As the core carrier of information transmission, reducing the energy consumption of opticalnetwork plays an important role for the power saving. Optical access network is the most popularaccess technology and power conserved optical access network system has become a hot studyissue. This paper studies the structure and properties of ONU in FTTH,and summarizes the mainenergy sources of ONU.After this,a new energy saving scheme based on intelligent shutdown hasbeen proposed. The ONU chip is designed into several separate power supply modules which canturn off unneeded modules intelligently according to real-time network conditions. In order to guarantee the quality of service, it’s particularly important to select controlmechanism in sleep saving algorithm. Sleep algorithm proposed in this paper can make ONU into adeep sleep or light sleep state depending on network conditions. The paper simulates the algorithmwith OPNET simulation tool. According to the simulation results, about75%energy of each ONUcould be saved on average, and when in medium network load,50%energy could be saved onaverage. The new scheme can satisfy the QoS with introducing some delay.According to the development characteristics and trend of the next generation optical accessnetwork, the paper analyses the energy saving technology for1G/10G hybrid system. Meanwhile, the paper presents a configurable ONU port cross-connect technology, which can shut down the idleport and provide higher security and link protection.OFDM-PON can modulate the distribution ofeach subcarrier dynamically. This technology can save energy and achieve low complexity optimalaccess network protocol framework.
