As the core technology of the next generation of wireless communication systems, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmission technology can greatly enhance the bandwidth efficiency and channel capacity. With the further development of MIMO technology, the establishment of an accurate MIMO channel model has become the basis for MIMO space-time coding, signal processing algorithm development and system performance evaluation. This paper first study the basic theory of radio channels, including wireless channel characteristics and channel modeling methods, and study the MIMO channel characteristics and MIMO channel modeling, then introduce some typical MIMO channel models. This paper focus on three-dimensional (3D) polarized MIMO channel modeling research, including polarization and MIMO spatial characteristics two aspects. Firstly, wireless polarization characteristics and channel modeling for polarization channel were studied, and the corresponding polarization channel modeling methods are introduced. Then this paper study the spatial characteristics of3D MIMO channel. Consider that the existing models didn’t take fully consideration about elevation or with the assumption that the azimuth and elevation distributions are independent, which not practical, this paper using Von Mises Fisher (VFM) distribution as power angle distribution function which combines the azimuth and elevation simultaneously, make the power distribution more accurate. Moreover the joint distribution function parameters can be obtained from channel measurement results using particular algorithm, make the distribution available in a variety of practical scenarios, and with strong adaptability and flexibility. Combined channel polarization and spatial propagation characteristics, this paper proposes a new scalable3D polarized MIMO channel model, which take into account a variety of MIMO channel propagation characteristics, including the angle of dispersion, Doppler shift, multipath fading, polarization transmission antenna structure and so on. The proposed model is highly scalable hybrid model of two-sphere model and elliptical cylinder model. It can be used for different channels (Rayleigh channel and Rice channel), different types of radiations (light of sight, once-or twice-bounded), and different deployment scenarios (macro-cells, micro-cells, small cell).Based on the proposed model, the close form expression of space-time correlation is derived. Based on the principle of correlation modeling, the channel coefficient calculation method is given, which greatly reduces computational complexity for channel matrix. Simulations are conducted to analyze the channel coefficients and channel capacity characteristics in different scenarios and polarization configurations, and the competitive performance of the proposed scheme further validates the effectiveness of the model.
