Information hiding is an important branch of information security technology. With the development of the Internet and the increasing of video transmission, digital image information hiding research techniques have aroused much concern and numerous studies and results are proposed. This paper focuses on the reversible data hiding algorithm of digital images, also known as digital image steganography, and concentrates on pixel value differencing and exploiting modification direction methods.First, an improved algorithm based on pixel value differencing and modulus functions is proposed. The algorithm redefines the modulus function and converts the embedding processing to an indeterminate equation problem. The pixel revision magnitude is reduced by selecting proper parameters and searching the optimal solution of the equation, thus achieving the purpose of decreasing the image distortion. Experimental results show that the algorithm has a significantly better performance on visual imperceptibility in low, middle and high payload. Experiments also reveal that the algorithm has a good ability to resist classic steganalysis. Secondary, the paper gives an improved method based on the exploiting modification direction algorithm. By increasing the modulus base and redefining the modulus function, the algorithm improves embedding efficiency stability. Experimental results show that the improved method is able to maintain a relatively high quality visual imperceptibility after embedding.
