| As the process of Chinese urbanization deepens, we see the transformation of thetraditional agricultural society has been turning it into a modern industrial-basedeconomy. With the reform deepening day by day, the Civil Society arises along withpeople’s sense of citizen rights. One of the most obvious examples is the citizens arefighting fiercer against the environmental damage caused by rapid GDP growth. Andamong them NIMBY protest is probably the most influential example. NIMBY protestis a form of resistance on the manufacturing events to be designed and operated aroundpeople’s neighbour, worrying about the destruction to surrounding environment such aspollution and noise etc. Most NIMBY protests had never been reported in the pastdecades due to some “risk control†by powerful local governments and mediaauthorities. But as the popularity of new internet media spreads rapidly, along with thearising sense of people’s rights protection, a new group named “Citizen Reportersâ€grows fast across the country. As a new form of media, citizen reporters are performingas a new free media power, restructuring the supply chain of media system. Up to nowthe citizen reporters have largely filled the gaps in the architecture of traditional media,and become the core part of NIMBY protest events.This report studies citizen reporters of NIMBY protests in four aspects: the origin,the methodology, the effect and the principles of their reporting behaviors. The reportalso explains the concepts and relationships of citizen reporters and NIMBY protests.We will mainly discuss how citizen reporters make full use of their advantages as anunconstrained media, to lead both the improvement of environmental protection and theacceleration of forming a new citizen society. However, we cannot ignore that there aresome problems with reports from such unregulated groups. Regularly can we see thescene of strong bias in reports instead of objective views on certain facts, or sometimeseven faked confusing news.
