From 1966 to 1976, a major symptom in culture of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution is the shortage of books. In those years, millions of outstanding works of ancient and modern were banned and destroyed as feudalism, capitalism, and revisionism books. Xinhua bookstores were selling rare books. Libraries were forced to close. Nanjing City was also not spared:1966 summer and fall, in the process of breaking the Four Olds, a large number of books were prohibited and destroyed. Knowledge systems were deadly bruised. Because of the Cultural Revolution, after the Third Plenary Session of the Communist Party of China, thirsty for knowledge have emerged within Nanjing and nationwide.This paper through five parts to sort out this 35 years of Reform and Opening up (1978-2013) to build the profile of Nanjing city book culture. They are provincial and municipal governments led reading promotion activities, reading promotional activities organized by public and private bookstores, activities in public libraries, activities in universities and book folk cultural activities in Nanjing. On this basis, the author concludes the characteristics of Nanjing book culture, pointing out the shortcomings and provides recommendations accordingly.Firstly, in the introductory part, the paper reviews the Cultural Revolution in Nanjing, then went on to briefly introduces the beginning of Reform and Opening up in 1978 in Nanjing overview of the book culture. Through the gathering of information, introduced the impact and practice of The rejuvenation of the Chinese reading activities in Nanjing. Meanwhile, this part makes literature review of relevant content, and research methods used by the author.Then in Chapter 2 to Chapter 6, the author presents the construction of the Nanjing City book culture profiles. In the provincial and municipal governments led reading promotion activities, the paper introduces Reading Festivals, and Scholarly Jiangsu Online" website. Reading Festivals events, activities, themes and activities, and the characteristics of the two study sections are summarized. In Scholarly Jiangsu Online part, columns are introduced and comment.Reading promotional activities organized by public and private bookstores, introduces the Xinhua Bookstore Group Co., Ltd. and its subsidiary, Jiangsu Province, Xinhua Readers’Club. This part is covering some background of organizing bookstores and reading activities. In some private bookstores, the author selects the Xinzhi bookstore, Sanlian cultural center, Library Avant Garde, and Popular Bookmall to elaborate. These four bookstores affected lives of people in Nanjing.Activities in public libraries, select the two most representative of Nanjing Public Library-Nanjing Library and Jinling Library. In addition to the reader service undertaken by the two libraries are introduced, but also highlights the launch of their distinctive reading promotion initiatives, including Nanjing Library Reading Festival, Taofeng Book Award, Nanjing Library Lectures and Taofeng Reading Club, Jinling Library Lectures, Jinling Library readers Association, Yuewei magazine and special attention to the efforts of in the promotion of children’s reading activities.Subsequently, the paper examines the activities in universities. The types of activities grouped into two categories:Reading Festival and independent magazines. ReadingFestival, the text selects Nanjing University, Southeast University and Nanjing Normal University’s Reading Festival for example, while picking up Book Paradise and Shulin Station as cases.Book folk cultural activities in Nanjing, focusing on the civil power of Nanjing book culture, private collection of active REVIEW magazine publishing, newspaper reading version of normalization, provincial and municipal Press compiled and distributed scholarly writings, widely influential books of old bookstores and fairs. This chapter deals with complex content and a wider scope.The final chapter, is an overview of the full text, summed up three features in Nanjing city book culture, pointing out the shortcomings of the current activities:the lack of distinctive reading promotion activities, newspaper reading versions are like commercial advertisements, short of scholarly books for ordinary people, ancient books industry is crumbling due to lack of support and security, and other private bibliophile. Finally, the above issues made five recommendations:Innovative reading promotion activities, to improve the quality of the newspaper reading edition, published by the popularity of the development of scholarly books, to pay more attention to the protection of ancient books market in Nanjing, calling for the early introduction and promulgated the Regulations of Jiangsu Province national reading promotion.
