Under the background of national advocacy and legislation of nationwide reading, the paper focused on Xinchang Township,located in Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in Western Hu nan, a place where the main native nation is Tujia. It elaborated current situation and characteristic s of rural children’s extracurricular reading materials from the aspect of supply and demand, by fie Id work and comparative analysis.The survey found that rural children have high degree of recognition and preference on extrac urricular reading materials; from their spiritual needs and affection tendency, there is huge demand of reading materials to the main audience who specially appeal for the reading materials about nat ional culture; the digital books have become more and more popular in the domain of reading mat erials among the rural children. However, there is a wide gap between rural and urban children in t he respect of the reading material’s quantity, variety and contact time, which could reflect many pr oblems of rural children’s extracurricular reading materials, embodying in market source, public s ource, topics of content, and the alternatives.To shorten the gap between rural and urban children in the time of contacting reading mater ials, the essay proposed methods for reference to optimize the ecosystem of the extracurricular rea ding materials for rural children, looking towards to bring extracurricular reading materials to rura 1 children, and make rural children be close to extracurricular reading materials.
