Food Safety Report In Risk Society

With the development of society, the enhancement of economy and the prosperity of the technology, our living standards have been improved. However, the rapid development also brings us some risks, threatening to our living. The food is what matters to people. But nowadays, the problems of the food safety frequently crops up. The continuous food incidents have been the hot topic of the public. From the San-lu powdered milk event to the illegal cooking oil, every incident would draw the public’s attention. Any food chain would come across with the quality problem, no matter the milk industry, or the meat industry. And the food problems would do something harm to the customers’ healthy. The reasons of food safety problems in modern society are mainly caused by the side effect of science and technology. Our society is full of risks that we could not eliminate them. Every new technology could bring us new risk, and the food safety problem is effected by the development of technology either, such as the transgenic technology being used on food or the bird flu made by the Chemical products. Adoption of the Risk theory would help the author with the analysis of the food safety problem in modern society.If it is important for us to realize the reason why the food safety problem always get the attention from the public and even disturb the social stabilization and the economic development, it should be study from the media communication on food safety. Because of the experience-limitation, the public’s realization, the acknowledgment and the evaluation of the food safety news are come from the media communication. Modern media technology exposes the public to the risks. Everyone experience the risk according to the media. A succession of reporting about the food safety problem and the huge number of risk communication keep stimulating the public’s sensitive nerve. It’s true that the media play the watchdog role and set the agenda for every day’s topic would help the public be wary about the risk, make the business scandal known to the public and even promote the management regulations and system’s building and perfection in food industry. However, there are too many questions, such as, how do the media present the food safety problems, which way would the media choose to report, what consequence can cause and is there any amplification effect work on the focus ratio that mismatch the degree of the risk. Allthe problems demand a further study.This paper is divided into five parts. Chapter 1 states the research background,methodology, literature review and the innovation. This paper possesses quite significant sense in both theory and realism. Chapter 2 makes a brief introduction about the risk society theory. Chapter 3 makes a combination with the risk society theory and the food safety problems in our country. A questionnaire is conducted with some volunteers for collecting data. The literature review is adopted to make analysis about the current situation of the food safety problem. The reasons of the problem are investigated from the risk society perspective. Chapter 4 discusses the condition and the problems of the food safety report with the combination of risk communication.This case study takes three typical cases to do the empirical analysis which are“Weekly Quality Report”, the OSI scandal and the dairy industry. And through this exploration, the role, the function along with the problems of the media in the Risk Communication is concluded. Chapter 5 is the key content and also an innovation of the dissertation. This part makes a reflection about the risk communication problems from the media ecology perspective. The media should be studied as the human being’s living environment, and is concerned with social influence caused by the media. For the construction of the risk society is made by the media, it is necessary to rethink the media presentation of the food safety problem from the prescriptive of the media ecology, especially the discussion about the social influence made by the media amplification. However, human beings master the technology, and it is human being who determines the effects of the media, the advantage and the disadvantage. The media is coexists with the human beings and the society, and anything wrong in the ecosystem would harass the whole environment. The effort is done to construct the media ecology from perspectives of the media, the public and the government. To sum up, the media problem about the food safety is concluded, and the measure is made to avoid the side effect of the risk communication.
