The Research Of Huizhou Merchants’ Book-collection During The Ming And Qing Dynasties

This thesis is based on the literature in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the documentation of Huizhou collections industry as well as the predecessors’ research results which starts from the life experiences of individual merchants and the behavioral characteristics of groups, by means of empirical, induction and comprehensive method, it analyze the reason of Huizhou merchants keen to book collection, illustrate the book collection of Huizhou merchants had influence on its own, and played an important role in the development of Huizhou and the land that Huizhou merchants lived. The full text is divided into three parts:introduction, body and conclusion.The introduction mainly reviews the academic history of Huizhou merchants and their book collection at domestic and foreign, summarized the main content, fully affirmed the known results in the field of Huizhou merchants book-collection, but the research of Huizhou book collection in the Ming and Qing dynasties is not perfect enough, especially the internal causes, characteristics and social influence of Huizhou book collection and the collection of Huizhou merchants and book collection culture. The insufficiency of senior scholars study is the focus of this article studies.Starting from the influence of the Central Plains culture in Huizhou area, business development has provided the economic foundation and the prosperity of Huizhou book carving, the first part of the text described the social background of the development of Huizhou merchants book collection culture in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The second part explores the cause of the Huizhou merchants is keen on books from the value idea, their appeal, and association with bureaucracy. The third part elaborated the characteristics of Huizhou merchant book collection activities in the Ming and Qing dynasties from these aspects:pay attention to practical and quality and protection, sharing awareness. The fourth part introduces four representative Huizhou bibliophile’s life experience during the Ming and Qing dynasties, describes their activities and achievement. The fifth part expounds the social influence of Huizhou book collection following these points below, the literature preservation, talent training and the development of private book collection culture.On the origin and development of cultural studies merchants books, it is one part of Huizhou studies that research the origin and development of Huizhou merchants’ book-collection. After the long-term collection, collation, collation, communication, protection of collections activity, Huizhou merchants bibliophiles formed a set of effective document management technology. It laid the foundation for the development of later bibliography, version science, collation science and other disciplines as well as the construction of library. All these have provided experience to that how to inherit and carry forward the excellent traditional Chinese culture in modern society. Huizhou merchants’ book-collection saved a lot of literature for later generations, some of these literature itself is one part of the excellent traditional Chinese culture. It is pointed out that the collection of Ming and Qing dynasty merchants culture not only can help us understand the development of positive interaction between business and cultural prosperity in the Ming and Qing dynasties but also provide a good reference for developing advanced culture, improving people’s living standards.
