Automatic recognition of geographic map is one of the important research projects which combines artificial intelligence and digital graph and image processing technology to solve problems such as data collection and constituting databases in GIS、auto-understanding of geographic space information. The conversion of maps from paper into digital, namely map-vectorization is very important. Geographic data based on contour lines、roads and hydrological system has became a crucial step in automatic recognition and extraction research. This paper studies a given color geographic map with a ratio of one to twenty-five thousand, especially probes into extraction of contour lines、roads and hydrological system.This paper particularly introduces recognition and extraction of contour lines in military geographic maps. Firstly, it explains some basic knowledge of contour lines, including its principles、characters、kinds、functions and distinguishing elevation. After that, processes a given military color geographic map in three ways, compares their virtues and defects to achieve a binary map. Then refines and denoises of this binary map to attain a map include disconnected contour lines. Ultimately, reconnects different disconnected contour lines in different ways to attain an integrated elevation map. This paper applies homologous ways to recognition and extraction roads and hydrological system on this military geographic map.Finally, combining theoretical research results and relative project, the writer developed a system to recognition and extraction constituents from geographic maps by making use of VC++ software. The outcome of this system indicates that the ways to extract contour lines、roads and hydrological system proposed in this paper is not only practical, it also achieves preferable effect.
