Full metal boundary smartphones were emerged in recent years as a new consumer electronic product. With its beautiful appearance, good structural strength and metallic tactile experience, it is rapidly becoming a mainstream mobile phone on the market and is welcomed by a growing number of consumers of all ages. Due to the current trends of the evolution of the full metal boundary smartphone antenna is toward to ultra-thin height, narrow frame, broadband and multi-function direction, more and more smaller available design space and increasingly complex antenna design problems are left to the mobile phone antenna engineers. In order to solve this problem, combined with relevant reference literature and practical design experience, three full metal boundary smartphone antennas have been proposed.Firstly, a penta-band, ultra-thin height, narrow frame full metal boundary smartphone antenna with slotted borders has been proposed. Which a basic slot antenna and a part of the metal ring involved in radiation, by a dual-band band-stop matching circuit and the matching circuit, the antenna can cover WWAN five operation bands. In this paper,the proposed antenna only occupy a small volume of 5 × 40 × 8mm3 and satisfy the requirements of the ultra-thin height, narrow frame of the full metal boundary smartphone antenna. The simulation and test results all demonstrate the proposed antenna have a good radiation characteristic.Secondly, a penta-band metal rear cover full metal boundary smartphone antenna has been introduced. The proposed antenna uses the technology of non-resonant antenna, which coupling elements and broadband matching circuit to excite the self-resonant mode of the system ground to obtain the required bandwidth. In this scheme, the coupling element as a traditional monopole antenna which has a resonance, the slot consist of the coupling element and the system ground also generates a resonant. The proposed non-resonant antenna only occupy a small volume of 6×70×6mm3.So, it is an ultra-thin, narrow frame full metal boundary smartphone antenna. The S-parameter, peak gain, radiation efficiency and pattern all meet design requirements from the simulation and test results.Finally, a reconfigurable full metal boundary smartphone antenna is presented in this paper. The antenna only occupy a small volume of 5×70×6mm3 and can cover LTE/WWAN(GSM850/900/1800/1900/UMTS2100/LTE2300/2500) seven band operation. It is shown that an inverted F antenna mode and loop antenna mode are controlled by the p-i-n diodes with simple bias circuit. In this paper, the battery, IC system board, LCD and other mobile phone parts are equivalent as a whole metal plate when we modeling the cell phone. The model of the antenna simulated the extremely bad physical radiation environment, hence, when the designed antenna applied to practical engineering application environment, the corresponding performance of the antenna will be enhanced. The antenna also is an ultra-thin, narrow frame full metal boundary smartphone antenna.
