Wireless sensor network(WSN) technology has been drawing the attention of the people of all walks, and been applied in various engineering fields. The wireless sensor network(WSN) is based on the wireless technology, in which through the arrangement of the network sensors, data are collected carrying more information and transmitted to end processor in a wireless manner. It saves a lot of hardware such as the circuitry used in the traditional networks and labor cost, along with other advantages such as energy-saving, real-time implement, low cost, strong anti-jamming ability and good communication among the network nodes, etc.Wireless technology progresses quickly, ZigBee technology has a lot of advantages over other technologies, such as much less energy consumption, simple structure, and much lower cost. ZigBee complements other wireless technologies, and can well be integrated into other devices, which is more suitable for application in the field of automation and remote control. As known, laboratory equipment is expensive, and demands higher requirements on the environment. This situation makes how to effectively monitor a laboratory in safety issues an very important task. Hence designing a laboratory safety monitoring system, which can real-time monitor the indoor indices such as temperature readings, humidity, noxious gas leakage, security, equipment condition, power supply, etc., is well worth the efforts on research. Considering the concrete situation of the laboratory, the scheme of the combination of wireless sensor and ZigBee can free the system from traditional complex cabling and wiring, high maintenance cost, hardship in inspection and repair, etc.Taking the system implementation process as the main thread, the following work is completed and introduced in this paper:(1) Comparing the presented technology with other similar technologies to validate the advantages identified in ZigBee for information transmission;(2) Analyzing the structure and ZigBee WSN protocol stack.(3) Analyzing the safety monitoring requirements for real-time monitoring the laboratory temperature, humidity, noxious gas leakage, security, power supply condition, etc.; Setting the in-time alarming system to respond to the abnormal situations;(4) Designing the circuitry for system;(5) Coding the software in C aiming at data transmission among network nodes and implementing the top-level PC monitoring functions.
