Space debris is a serious threat to the security of spacecraft.To protect our spacecraft, we have to establish active monitoring and early warning system for space debris.The accuracy and real-time performance of the existing ground-based early warning system is highly effected by the atmosphere and the position. To solve this problem, we have to put a space-based early warning system online. The space-based early warning system is based on accurate target recognition and tracking technology which is also the key of cross-docking and laser communication. It is a hot spot in space technology. This technology is a combination of advanced sensor, high performance hardware, micro-mechanical, microelectronics, etc. The core of this technology is recognition and tracking software. The algorithm of this software is a strategic point in software designing and we have a lot of work to do with it.The main goal of this article is to design a recognition and tracking algorithm which is applied to space applications based on image processing. We designed a core algorithm called Plane Triangle Principal Component Analysis(PTPCA) to reduce the computational complexity of star pattern matching and made a reduction in the data capacity of the star map database, and improved the reliability of the star matching. In order to recognize the weak and slowly moving target, we made an integrated application of inter frame motion recognition and star matching. This made a progress in recognition rate. The result of simulation test proved that our algorithm is better than existing.This research shows that recognition and tracking algorithm based on PTPCA is feasible, faster in recognizing speed, and more reliable. And because of its versatility, it can be used in cross-docking and laser communication as well.
