Target tracking is defined by the measurement dates processing from the target and current state estimates. Along with the strengthening of technological development and the target maneuverability, traditional single model tracking algorithm can no longer cater to users. Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) algorithm makes up for the shortage of single model algorithm and adapts to volatile movement of the target. It has been studied extensively in practice.Radar target tracking technology for Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) is an important research topic and maneuvering target tracking is a difficult issue. Compared with the traditional tracking algorithms, IMM algorithm is a better solution. It has a great deal of value and practical research significance. But IMM algorithm needs prior information such as transition probabilities and process noise. They remain stable in the process of movement. As a result, it can’t adapt to the maneuvering movement. So model transition probability matrix adaptive algorithm and the process noise adaptive algorithm are proposed. The disadvantages of IMM algorithm have been improved pertinently. The paper consist of the following three parts:The first part consists of Chapter 1 and Chapter 2. This section first reviews the research and development status of target tracking technology. Target tracking models such as Constant Velocity (CV), Constant Acceleration (CA) and Constant Turn (CT) are summarized. Then commonly used target tracking algorithms such as Kalman filter, extended Kalman filter and Unscented Kalman filter algorithm are introduced. Finally, the characteristics of algorithms are analyzed. The second part consists of Chapter 3. This section gives a brief introduction of common multiple model algorithms. The part makes improvements from aspects of transition probability and process noise. Finally, in comparison with that of the single model algorithm, the overall performance of IMM is better in the simulation of tracking a maneuvering target. Then, in the simulation of traditional IMM algorithm and improved IMM, results indicate that tracking performance of the improved IMM algorithm is superior to that of conventional IMM algorithm. The third part consists of Chapter 4. The composition, structure and function of the VTS system are introduced. VTS radar echo signal processing and tracking process are given. In the Visual Studio 2008 platform, software programming of the improved IMM algorithm achieves the goal of the VTS target tracking.
