The traditional streaming media applications can easily trigger "single points of failure" and "performance bottlenecks". The P2P-based media streaming technology can provide an efficient solution to these kinds of issuses, which had become one of the hot spots in both academia and industry. Nowadays, a great variety of P2P streaming systems have been deployed and commercialization in a large scale. However, most of them use proprietary protocols that perform similar functionalities, which will certainly increase the complexity of the interaction among different streaming applications and bring substantia difficulties in their integration with ISP (Internet Service Provider) and CDN (Content Distribution Network). To satisfy the continuous demands of integration of P2P streaming with global content delivery infrastructure of the Internet, thers is an urgent need for a novel and open standard P2P streaming signaling protocol suite. Therefore, IETF founded a workgroup named PPSP (Peer to Peer Streaming Protocol) to research and standarlize PPSP protocol, which is committed to solve the problems of media streaming service interactions in converged network. In this paper, PPSP is investigated and simulated, details are as follows:Firstly, PPSP is analysed. At present, PPSP is still in stage of the standardization process and developing rapidly, it is inevitable to summarize the developments, core technology and research results of PPSP. Therefore, this paper presents PPSP in detail. The basic issues to be solved, the basic research content and available achievements of PPSP woring group are summarized and described in the first place. Also, the protocols defined by PPSP woring group, that is, PPSP Tracker Protocol and PPSP Peer Protocol are detailed separately, in which the message type and process are addressed.Secondly, an IETF draft named "Usage of Peer-to-Peer Streaming Protocol" is proposed. Through in-depth investigation of PPSP, the overall process of PPSP and deficiencies of current PPSP are summarized. Additionally, several extensions and optimizations for PPSP-TP and PPSP-PP from message level and mechanism are proposed. Then the nteroperability of PPSP is researched, and the basic cooperation schemes of PPSP with ALTO and DSN are discussed.Thirdly, a simulation model of PPSP is proposed. In order to have a better study of PPSP, promote the standardization of PPSP and the research of associated mechanisms, combining with the characters of OMNeT++ and PPSP, this paper proposes a modularization PPSP simulation model. The overall network and logical design of this model are described. Then, the specific constructions and implementations of entity, message and protocol process are dicussed. Finally, the experimental P2P simulation scenarios are established and the interacting procedures and functionalities are tested and analyzed, which evaluates the feasibility of proposed model.
