Present encoding formats have some problems, such as serious deterioration of signal-to-noise ratio,bit error rate increases and lower spectrum efficiency, for the high-speed fiber communication with 40Gb/s and above. Therefore, looking for new encoding format becomes an urgent task. Polarization coding is a research hot spot now. Under the support of the National Nature Science Foundation, this dissertation focuses, on the development of multi polarization encoder. The main works of this dissertation are presented as following:Firstly, a polarization encoder was designed based on the detailed analysis of the principle and structure of Lithium niobate (LN) phase modulator. And the simulation experiment was carried out for the additional modulated voltage signal. Experimental results show that the effect of the encoder is consistent with the theoretical calculation. Meanwhile, another polarization encoder was designed based on polarization characteristics of semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA). And the simulation experiment was also carried out for the additional modulated current signal. Experimental results show that the effect of the encoder is consistent with the theoretical calculation. Finally, we designed of a multi polarization encoder was designed with SOA and LN by using the characteristic of the orthogonal polarization state of the power balance. The coding of four polarization state information was realized. An analysis of the experimental simulation results is carried in detail, and some ideas that are provided for how to achieve more polarization states coding in the next step.
