Energy-limited has been always restricted the development and application of ZigBee technology. Energy consumption of ZigBee node is mainly used for data delivery. Because routing protocol stipulates forward route of data packets, routing protocol plays an important role in wireless sensor network. Therefore, it means a lot to study prolonging network lifetime of the routing protocol.Based on the difference of network scale, flat and clustered energy awareness routing protocols are designed. Energy-awared flat routing protocol was designed to suit small-sized ZigBee network. The protocol sets a threshold, which can choose maximum route of minimum residual energy when all available route less than the threshold, otherwise choose minimum route. For large-sized ZigBee network, unequal clustering routing protocol was designed based on energy awareness. Setting different competitive radius for different distance between node and coordinator to build clusters of various sizes, and it makes clusters near coordinator node smaller in size.The protocol balances node energy by cluster-head shifting mechanism, Adopts an multihop routing system between clusters and chooses relay node according to the cost.Finally, ZigBee flat routing protocol on the basis of energy awareness was realized on ZigBee open source protocol stack freakZ, and unequal clustering ZigBee routing protocol is simulated on Matlab. The experiment result shows our designed routing protocol can prolong network lifetime to a certain extent.
