As one of national creative industries requiring great focus on it, 3D animation boasts drastic space for development, among which character animation is especially sparkling due to its wide range of characters and realistic simulation of scenes.Acting an uncompetitive role in the built of the whole 3D animation, character animation provides a bridge through which the character is realized. During the study and investigation on the character animation, we find that the setting of the characteristic movement which has to do with the expression of the emotion and character is one of the most important criterion judging the quality of one character animation. However, the development and practice of it in our country is still at its primary stage. The relative research methods that can be referred are lack. Though technologically reality in the real practice, most of the companies in domestic circumstances remain on making lost-cost, short-term and outsourcing animation and pay rare attention on the research of characteristic movement setting which is more complicated, so that the domestic animations fail to catch the outstanding foreign ones at characteristic movements, individuation and efficiency of characteristic movement setting, and to compete in the global market shares. Therefore, the paper aims to provide some new animation theories and techniques that help to improve the efficiency and reduce cost.The paper initially analyses the development of 3D animation. Referring to some relevant theories it provides some rules and summaries that contains the developing history of 3D characteristic animation, the current situation of both foreign and 3D domestic characteristic animation, and the problems of domestic 3D animation particularly. Secondly, it focuses on the basic theory of 3D animation, introducing and explaining the background, producing methods and the division of 3D animation. Then, the designing method of 3D characteristic animation movement setting is discussed and, the theories of producing characteristic movement and the methods of making models and bones are illustrated by examples. For better proving the theories raised above, the paper designs an animation named ‘hometown’,which is based on the research when practicing. Furthermore, how to realize the characteristic movement setting is revealed paralleled with the illustrations. Finally, according to the theories above, it analyzes how the relative theories impact on the real practice of the whole animation, that is, improving the quality of bone model animation( model, bone, skin and key-frame animation) and reducing the duration and rework times of the project efficiently.By using the animation ‘hometown’ as an example, the paper practices the research results in the real experience, and provides demonstration of the methods put forward. Though the practice, it is found that the methods raised up in the paper is appropriate for producing the animation of this type, which is better for improving the efficiency and expression of animation production when compared with the traditional methods.
