Urbanization is the only way for modernization and the transition from agriculturalcivilization to industrial civilization. It plays an essential part in solving Three RuralIssues, expanding domestic demands, and promoting an upgrade of the industrialstructure, thereby contributing to building a moderately prosperous society andenhancing China’s overall economic strength, which further improves people’s livingstandards, coordinates regional and rural development, and accelerates the socialistmodernization. In general, urbanization is a natural-historical process, involving anoverall transition from a traditional and backward country life to an urban life. From ahistorical perspective, urbanization is an inevitable choice for the evolution toindustrialization and modernization. Therefore, analyzing this problem can not onlycontribute to theories but also provide guidance on solving actual problems in China’ssocial and economic reform.Study on the urbanization of Shaanxi province has a special significance consideringits natural, historical and geographical conditions. Based on the natural geography aswell as economic and social structures, the three parts, northern, central and southernShaanxi are quite different, which requires different urbanization methods and patterns.In northern Shaanxi, plateau and desert areas have a fragile ecology, and is not suitablefor large-scale agricultural production. Considering the sparsely populated situation withrich resources. Central Shaanxi (also called Guanzhong area) has always been a rich landof agricultural production. In addition, with the continuous industrial construction anddevelopment after the founding of the state, this area has been densely densely populated,flourishing in cultural development. This lays down a solid cultural and economic foundation for the urbanization. In southern Shaanxi, most areas are covered bymountains and canyons except the Hanzhong plain area. Therefore, thecenter-city-oriented gathering must be used for urbanization.With reference to the basic principles and methods of spatial economics as well asthe experience of urbanization at home and abroad, this paper reviews the developmentpatterns of urbanization in different periods since the foundation of the state, describesthe problems in urbanization of Shaanxi, and provides a comparative analysis on thoseproblems. By building the spatial distribution of urbanization in Shaanxi, this paperanalyzes the current situation and problems of the urbanization in northern, central, andsouthern Shaanxi, respectively, aiming to propose suggestions on the overall urbanizationin Shaanxi. In addition, the author hopes that this paper can provide useful lessons infuture development and improvement of the urbanization even in the whole westernregion.
