In recent years, with the growing demand for gold, the gold industry develops rapidly, resulting in the growing exhaustion of domestic easily exploited gold ores, and the extensive concern about the use of refractory gold resources. Plus the increasing sense of environmental protection, the tailings pollution problem is drawing public attention. Therefore, the research and development on the leaching technologies of refractory gold ores containing arsenic and sulfur is a top priority, and the biological oxidation based gold leaching technology appears just to solve this problem. The biological oxidation based gold leaching technology features high recovery rate, simple process and low pollution etc., and has become a major technology in the world to deal with low-grade gold ores. The technology was introduced to China in2000, and has experienced a boost since then. By now, the technology has entered a period of rapid development of engineering application. At the same time, however, many small and medium-sized gold producers encountered many problems in the practical application when trying this technology, which puts them in front of a dilemma.Guided by the supply and demand of gold, this paper elaborates on the shortage of high-grade gold and the urgency to utilize refractory, low-grade gold resources. By combining theories and cases, the paper researches on the reason, status and prospect of the domestic application of the biological metallurgy technology. Firstly, the paper introduces the biological metallurgy technology on the base of domestic and foreign literature, and then by listing the successful cases of applications on refractory ore resource, witnesses the great contribution of the technology to the use of refractory ores. Secondly, the paper analyzes the state of the art, and demonstrates the great potential of this technology. While the anther, points out the necessity and importance of applying the technology. Finally, the paper discusses the difficulties encountered in application and puts forward the solution. The analysis shows that it is necessary for domestic gold producers to upgrade traditional production mode by adopting new technology.In the cast study of R company case; firstly, the anther adopts’compare and analyze’method to compare the advantages and disadvantages of the three technologies:roasting oxidation, pressure oxidation and biological oxidation, and proves the applicability for companies of biological oxidation. Secondly, the anther analyzes the problems that R company encounters in applying the technology, and put forward the corresponding solutions in the aspects of policy, climate, safety and environment protection. Finally, by analyzing the social and economical benefits that this technology brings, the anther demonstrates the feasibility and significance of the technology, and proves its promising future. The work of this paper can also serve as a reference to producers who is facing problems discussed above.
