Since entering the WTO, China’s exports grew very rapidly and has overtakenGermany ranking first in the world, became a truly big trading nation. However, ourexports also exsit many issues For example it does not respond well to external shocksand the trade conditions is becoming worse. Therefore, decomposing export tointensive margin and extensive margin, exploring the micro path of China’s exportexpansion, is of great theoretical and practical significance for optimizing the exportstructure and changing export’s growth mode in China. This paper first through the total amount of export, the geographical orientationof exports, productstructure of export and marginal structure of export conducted ananalysis of current situation and characteristics of China’s overall export. Then, wedecompose the export growth into the intensive and extensive margin on the Amiti’smethod to by using HS02-6trade data.Further,we break intensive margin down intoprice and volume effects and decompose extensive margin into product diversificationand market diversification. The results show that: in terms of species China’s exportgrowth gradually leading by extensive margin, but in terms of amount,China’s exportgrowth absolutely expande along intensive margin. In the intensive margin volumeeffects is taking the main position, while,in the extensive margin it is the marketdiversification responsible for the growth. Then, this paper decompose the industrial sectors’export extensive margin intoproduct diversification and market diversification under the prior method. The resultshows that there is difference among industries, and within industries, marketdiversification is the mian driving force.Further, this paper also use Herfindal index tocompute industrial degree of concentration which is reverse measuring of marketdiversification.Finaly, based on the existing theory, this paper built econometricmodels, using GMM method to conduct empirical study in affecting factors ofintensive and extensive margin. The results show that: different factors have differenteffects, under those conclusions, this paper provides policy recommendationsaccording to the conclusion we derived.
