Protecting the environment and taking the road of sustainable development has become the consensus of the international community. Governments around the world put environmental protection on the important position, and spare no effort to achieve coordinated development of society, economy and ecology. Our country always put ecological environment protection in prominent locations, believe that protecting the environment like protecting the eyes, the same treatment ecological environment as life. Xinjiang region unique, natural conditions and ecological environment is different from other areas of the country, susceptible to damage and difficult to repair. Since the Western Development, Xinjiang’s economic and social development has made great achievements, but economic development is also accompanied by a large number of serious environmental pollution and resource consumption. Such development, whether the ecological environment of Xinjiang can sustain its resource of energy consumption, is worth us to study and discuss.Ecological footprint are metaphors for human footprints left by the consumption of all kinds of resources, scholars usually associate it with the bearing capacity of the natural ecological system are compared, and quantitative judgment within a certain range of regional sustainable development. When the demand for all kinds of human resources more than natural ecosystem carrying capacity, will produce the ecological deficit, which will also be difficult to maintain sustainable development. Calculated the ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity as a result, have the characteristics of intuitive and easy to compare, so this paper choose this kind of calculation method to research sustainable development in Xinjiang. This paper reviews the research progress of ecological footprint at home and abroad, based on the ecological footprint theory and empirical studies at home and abroad are analyzed and summarized, to Xinjiang food, meat, and energy consumption and various types of land supply for the data source, calculate the ecological footprint and ecological carrying capacity in Xinjiang from 2000 to 2012. In the process of ecological footprint is calculated, using the easy to the provincial administrative interval between ecological footprint compared with a national average productivity algorithms; In the process of bearing capacity calculation, the Xinjiang latest 13 years production factor play an important role in the calculation results of Xinjiang ecological bearing capacity of scientific computing. Introduced in 2000-2012 GDP and population data in Xinjiang, ecological pressure index, ten thousand yuan GDP and moderate population and other indicators of Xinjiang ecological footprint suitability for research. Using grey correlation analysis and multiple linear regression analysis mutual authentication way to conduct the thorough research to the Xinjiang ecological footprint, find out the most direct and the most fundamental Xinjiang ecological footprint of influencing factors. Finally, Xinjiang economic and ecological sustainable development put forward reasonable suggestions. The research results show that, since 2000 the development of the western region of Xinjiang ecological sharpening contradictions between the supply and demand. Xinjiang ecological deficit from 2007, its deficit in deepening, the consumption of energy resources, tremendous pressure on ecological environment. Ten thousand yuan GDP in slow decline, improve efficiency of resource utilization. Studies show that moderate population in Xinjiang actual population has more than moderate population levels, need to give enough attention. Finally it is concluded that the fixed asset investment growth rate and natural population growth rate is the main influencing factors of the ecological footprint growth in Xinjiang, urban per capita disposable income, the second industry share of GDP and the level of urbanization indicators also have influence on growth of Xinjiang ecological footprint. Ecological health sustainable development of xinjiang, need to save energy and improve the efficiency of energy; optimize the industrial structure, promote the development of environmental friendly industries; bigger and stronger Xinjiang’s tourism; improve efficiency of investment in fixed assets; we will speed up the establishment of a new type of urbanization; building water conservancy projects; increase energy conservation and environmental protection awareness; to strengthen the construction of ecological civilization and the development of ecological products and other aspects.
