Research On The Relationship Between Corporate Environmental Strategy Choice And Performance

Under the background of China’s implementation of green development model, how to reconcile the contradiction between economic development and environmental protection has become a topic of concern. Corporations as the micro-economic entity must undertake the social responsibility of environmental protection. Overall, Chinese enterprises are still in a passive position of the environmental management, and the number of positive corporate environmental strategy is still relatively small. Based on the investigation of corporate environmental strategies choices, this paper studies the correlation between environmental strategy choice and business performance, providing reference for corporations to choice the reasonable environmental strategy, to improve business performance and to promote sustainable development.Corporate environmental strategies can be divided into four categories, namely resistant environmental strategy, reactive environmental strategies, adaptive environmental strategy and proactive environmental strategy. This article selects the high pollution listed companies as the sample, by means of corporate social responsibility reports and other publicly available information, using the content analysis, to define and classify corporate environmental strategy. Based on the sample of 2010 and 2014 data, by constructing the relational model of environmental strategy choice and operating performance, this paper examines the relationship between corporate environmental strategy and business performance.The empirical results showed that companies carry out environmental strategic choice will have an impact on business performance. Specifically, proactive environmental strategy had a positive effect on business performance, and adaptive environmental strategy had an uncertain effect on business performance, and reactive and resistant environmental strategies had a negative impact on business performance. But relative to the reactive environmental strategy, resistant environmental strategy reduced the business performance more greatly. In the aspects of the drivers of environmental strategy choice, environmental regulation in high -polluting industries had no effect of the relationship between corporate environmental strategy and business performance, but the degree of competition in product markets had a positive impact on the relationship between corporate environmental strategy and business performance choice. The government should take effective measures to encourage enterprises to choose the proactive environmental strategy, as well as to increase the punishment of illegal environmental actions, and to promote businesses to choose positive environmental strategies.
