Reconstruction Of The Liqian City —The Dramatic Features In Modern Exotic Culture Tourism

With the rapid development of tourism in recent years, almost all tourist destinations are filled with people during holidays. As early as in the 1980 s, tourism started to become a heated topic in anthropology and sociology. Some of these researches involve the issue of authenticity. For instance, some scholars have distinguished four different types of authenticities, namely: Objective authenticity, Constructive authenticity, Postmodern authenticity and Existential authenticity. Inspired by these theoretical insights, I conducted fieldwork in Yongchang County to study the rebuilding process of Liqian City in the county. My research looks into 1) the impact of tourism development on neighboring regions; 2) the understandings of the authenticity by various groups; and 3) dramatic features of the rebuilding process.In the circumstance where the "Silk Road Economic Belt" strategy has been proposed, this study reveals that the development of tourism can bring Yongchang County, a remote place, economic prosperity to some extent. At the same time, the impact is limited because of its own geographical and economic restrictions. The above-noted four types of authenticities are found here, too, but they are understood differently by different groups: various motivations and goals contribute to this difference. In particular, the development of tourist destination depends much on the Constructive authenticity, which is the foundation of the Liqian City’s rebuilding. In fact, in the course of this process, all those happen are just like theatrical performances. However, many forms of modern tourism, especially cultural tourism, are displayed to the public eyes just like this.
