The theory of knowledge of ionospheric scintillation and current research are introduced. After that, based on ionospheric scintillation monitoring data at South Pole station and Mcmurdo station in Antarctica in the year of 2011, the temporal, diurnal, monthly and seasonal variations of the characteristics of ionospheric phase scintillation and amplitude scintillation have been studied. In addition, the correlation of ionospheric scintillation indexs and GPS TEC variations in space and time which acquired by GPS receiver are studied in polar. Applicability of the global ionospheric scintillation model(GISM) is explored in Antarctic. The main contents and results are as follows:1. Through analyzing Scintillation monitoring data of South Pole Station and Mcmurdo Station in the year of 2011 in polar regions, statistical results show that ionospheric scintillation are relatively quiet and phase scintillation activities are more pronounced than amplitude scintillation activities in Antarctic. The phase scintillation index(Sigma phi) with Sigma phi > 0.3 took place infrequently only with the occurrence rate of is 0.14% and 0.26%throughout the year. The occurrence rate of phase scintillation in spring and autumn was significantly stronger than that in the winter and and summer. The lowest occurrence rate is in January and the highest in April and October. Phase scintillation mainly appeared on the12 UTC to18UTC. And the different intensities of phase scintillation have a similar time variation characteristics.2. Characteristics of ionospheric scintillation and ionospheric irregularities over Antarctic shows that variation of phase scintillation index sigma phi with time is very similar to that of ROTI and TEC horizontal gradient. And phase scintillation presents a good correlation with TEC horizontal gradient and ROTI during a magnetic storm. This indicates that, especially in the absence of direct phase scintillation index measurements like sigma phi, ROTI and GPS TEC horizontal gradients can be used as the important optional parameters.3. Through analyzing of applicability of GISM model over Antarctic, the results show that phase scintillation index in South Pole Station and Mcmurdo station basically does not exceed 0.2 in the year of 2011 throughout the year. Phase scintillation that is greater than 0.1occurrences in March? April? September and December. The occurrence rate of phase scintillation is 60% and the maximum is 80%. Other months are zero. These have much more deviation with the measured data, so applicability of GISM model in Antarctic is poor.
