A Study Of Physics Translation On The "Xing Xing Xue Yao" In The Late Qing Dynasty

"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)is li tuo(1840-1911)'s translation in the late qing dynasty.It was translated from French Adolphe Canot(1804-1887)'s"elementary physics",and first published in 1899.It was a relatively systematic translation in the late 19th century."Xing Xing Xue Yao"includes the content of fundamental physics such as the generality of object,mechanics,hydrics,science of gas,acoustics,thermology,optics,magnetism,electricity,climatology,etc.It plays an important role in disseminating the knowledge of physics in the late qing dynasty.Through literature research and comparative research method,this paper have combed the"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)translated by Li tuo(1840~1911)a catholic,in the late qing dynasty in 1899,about its printing,content,characteristics,dissemination,and so on.This paper mainly discusses the above problems in the following aspects:In the second chapter,this paper provides a brief overview of"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)'s Publishing background,and clarifies the author,Li tuo's life-story.It concludes the key contribution to physics emphatically."Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)translated by Li tuo is the first Chinese independent translation of the physics books,it showed Chinese people's understanding and choice of physics.It changed the way that physics books have been translated by foreign missionaries and Chinese people.In the third chapter,by carefully comparison and analysis between"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????),English Elementary school Treatise on Physics and French Traite Elementaire de Physique in their content and structure,this paper determines that the"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)is based on the French one.And we find that Li tuo made a lot of reduction and modification.Li tuo was the first person who translated"Physics"into"Xing Xing Xue"("???"),there was one chapter called"Xing Xing"("??")to introduce the nature of object in his work"Wu Li Tui Yuan"published in 1894.When Li tuo presided over Zhendan college in shanghai in 1905,he had Set up a course called"Xing Xing"("??")in the school curriculum.In the fourth chapter,this paper analyzes the characteristics of the translation of"xing xing xue yao"(??????).We compare"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)with"Sheng Xue Jie Yao"(??????),"Guang Xue Jie Yao"(??????),"Re Xue Jie Yao"(??????)Mainly,which were translated into Chinese from the same original physics work,and notice the characteristics of translation in the process,such as the translation style,accept or reject,and the aspect of complement.In the fifth chapter,This paper introduces the dissemination and effect of"Xing Xing Xue Yao"(??????)in the late qing dynasty.It is discovered that the book was reprinted in 1906,and we compare two different versions 1899 and 1906.Through the reprint of"sexology"and using as the teaching materials the church school,this paper discusses the effect on the dissemination of physics in the late qing dynasty.
