Digital elevation model(DEM)is a kind of digital model aiming at the surface morphology. With the expression of this digital model, the three-dimensional features of the real world can be fully and truly demonstrated. In recent years, due to the development of remote sensing technology, the acquisition of high-precision terrain data becomes easier. At the same time, with the continuous development of the field of research, the application of massive DEM data is more and more widely.Nowadays, the application of mass data is more and more frequent, and the compression coding of DEM has become an important research content. As an important component of DEM model, the regular grid model has been widely used in various fields. This paper from a number of commonly used grid model compression encoding method to analyze their respective advantages and disadvantages, the best adaptation of four binary tree encoding algorithm focuses on analysis and improvement and innovation on the basis of the existing encoding method,in order to improve the encoding performance. The innovations of this paper are:(1)propose a large number of data redundancy problems brought up four tree;(2)proposed a new four fork tree encoding method, which greatly reduces the redundancy brought up,and only a small increase in computation cost;(3)by the comparative test encoding the method presented in this paper with the traditional encoding method,to verify the performance improvement.
