Polystyrene microspheres ?PS? or functionalized PS are applied into different fields due to their facile polymerization and low cost etc. The cross-linked polystyrene microspheres?CPS? were prepared via modified boiling soap-free polymerization, PS microspheres and KH570-PS microspheres were polymerization by emulsion polymerization. The prepared microspheres were characterized by Scanning Electronic Microscope?SEM?, Transmittion Electronic Microscope?TEM?, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy ?FTIR?, Differential scanning calorimetry ?DSC? and Particle size analyzer.CPS is firstly used as density-reducing agent in drilling fluid. The density of the Xanthan Gum solution used to simulate drilling fluid is also measured under different factors including CPS content, rolling time, temperature, and pH value. The mechanism of density variation for Xanthan Gum solution is also investigated. Results showed that the density of the Xanthan Gum solution is decreased at 100 oC in a basic environment by using CPS microspheres as a density-reducing agent and CPS is potential useful as a density-reducing agent in drilling fluid.PS and KH570-PS are firstly used as absorbent to absorb TNT. The thermal model and dynamic model were also applied to describe and elucidate the TNT absorption mechanism. Results show the adsorption capacity of PS and KH570-PS are 5.26mg.g-1 and 3.90mg.g-1 respectively when the initial concentration of TNT is 100mg.L-1 at 298K. The adsorption of TNT toward two kind microspheres was contributed to different isotherm models at different temperatures. The pseudo second-order kinetic model provided excellent kinetic data fitting for the two kinds of adsorbents. In addition to the large absorption capacity, the PS microspheres are reusable.
