Magnesium and magnesium alloy components are widely used in the industrial area of aerospace, rail transportation, automotive production etc. The application of steel in the automotive industry and other areas always occupies the dominant position. Achieving the effective connection between magnesium alloy and steel will have an important significance for the industrial area of aerospace, rail transportation, automotive production etc. But in the process of magnesium/steel welding, the poor welding performance of magnesium alloy and steel is the major problem. In this work, through the addition of the third party metal interlayer combined with adhesive, the effect of the thickness of the adhesive layer (0.05mm,0.1mm,0.2mm) and the type of sandwich(nickel, copper, zinc) on the joint performance of resistance welding and weld bonding of AZ31B magnesium alloy and dissimilar metals of Q235 low carbon steel were studied. The results from the experiment reveal that the performance of direct spot welding between magnesium and steel is very poor and its shear strength is only 2450N.The addition of nickel interlayer and copper interlayer can improve the welding properties of magnesium/steel and reduce the welding defects of magnesium/steel direct spot welding, shear strength are respectively reach to 3952N and 3126N; Zinc interlayer can not successfully connect magnesium metal with steel.Welding properties of magnesium/steel dissimilar metals spot welding under the condition of 0.1mm layer thickness is better than the condition of 0.05mm and 0.2mm layer thickness. The shear strength of the magnesium/steel weld bonding under 0.1mm layer thickness can reach to 4469N which is the highest shear strength; When connected the magnesium alloy and steel with the addition of nickel interlayer by resistance weldbonding, the shear strength under 0.1mm layer thickness can reach to 6899N which is the highest shear strength. Nickel interlayer can form effective connections with magnesium and steel respectively, the addition of nickel interlayer can significantly improve the mechanical properties of magnesium/steel weld bonding joint.
