With the development of human society, energy and environmental issues are becoming more and more prominent. In order to solve the energy crisis, renewable and environmentally friendly energy is eagerly required. The solar cell attracts much attention due to its directly conversion from solar energy directly to electricity. As a new type of solar cell device, dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSCs) have been widely investigated, because of their advantages of low cost, simple synthesis process, and the relatively high power conversion efficiency. As the key component of the dye-sensitized solar cell, the sensitizer affects the power conversion efficiency of the DSSCs to considerable extent. Due to the high efficiency, low production cost and simple synthetic process, metal-free organic dyes becomes the research hotspot in recent years. Two novel coumarin dyes were designed and synthesized in this work. After the optical and electrochemical properties were examined, these two coumarin dyes were applied in DSSCs and the photovoltaic performance was investigated. In Chapter 1, the structure, working theory, and the basic parameters of dye-sensitized solar cell were briefly discussed. The characteristics, classification, and development in recent years of dye sensitizer were also described. At last, the design idea and the research content of this work were proposed. In Chapter 2, two novel coumarin dyes with different electron transporting ability were designed and synthesized, containing coumarin segment as the donor, benzothiadiazole unit as the auxiliary acceptor, benzene or thiophene unit as the?-linker, and cyanoacetic acid as the acceptor. In Chapter 3, the optical and electrochemical properties, as well as the photovoltaic performance of the two dyes were examined in detail. In Chapter 4, the conclusions were presented.
