Uranium was one of typical radionuclide and has highly toxic. The health effects associated with oral or dermal exposure to natural and depleted uranium appear to be solely chemical in nature and related to uranium's radiological properties. The toxicity of natural uranium varies according to its chemical form and the more soluble, and hexavalent form has been shown to be the most potent systemic toxicant. Consequently, a renewed interest was found in uranium and in the means to chelate them because handling of uranium in the nuclear industry as well as for military purposes is increasing. Thus, a number of ligands with different chelating group have been studied. Although the measure of simply relying on ligands for nuclides decorporation can be realized, considering radioactivity of nuclides also would trigger emerging of undesirable highly reactive free radicals in vivo. Therefore, we have designed and synthesized bifunctional metal chelator to pursuit the aim of scavenging free radical and chelating specific metal ions. The C60 fullerene is a remarkable stable compound consisting of the intrinsically large electronegativity to which free radicals can be added. Therefore, it is described as a ‘radical sponge'.The paper successfully obtained a novel water-soluble fullerene-based hydroxypydinone derivatives by five-step process involving hydroxyl protection, the amidation, the heterocyclice formation, the deprotection and substituted chlorine atom of C60Cl6 that wasn't any report before. The structure of the product gained through the aforementioned reactions has to be identified and characteristically analyzed by means of scanning and inspection under the FTIR, 1H NMR, 13 C NMR and Mass spectra. The DPPH? and fluorescence spectra methods demonstrated that these derivatives have bifunction of antioxidant ability and chelating property. One mole fullerene-based hydroxypydinone derivatives can scaveng six mole DPPH?. The fluorescence spectra also indicated fullerene-based hydroxypydinone derivatives be able to chelating Ce(III) ion and have fluorescence quenching effect.
