This thesis deals with some key issues in the software and hardware platform development of the CNC system for a novel five-axis machine tool based on a 3-DOF parallel spindle head, covering kinematics analysis, CNC system function, reliability enhancement, and CNC machining process. The following contributions have been made.On the basis of IPC and Turbo PMAC motion controller, the hardware platform of the five-axis machine tool CNC system is constructed. The software system is designed based on LabVIEW software combined with Turbo PMAC library files. According to common fault analysis of the CNC machine tool prototype, the hardware and software design are improved, in order to enhance system reliability.According to the characteristics of parallel mechanism, the post processing function, program simulation function, program breakpoint preservation and restoration function are developed based on LabVIEW software. The post processing function is implemented to converse the cutter location files to five-axis NC codes automatically. With the program simulation function, NC machining tool paths can display in real-time, Thus the necessary functions oriented to five-axis CNC machining are improved.A three-dimensional model of "S" shape specimen is established based on cubic uniform B-spline curve. Tool path planning is completed based on commercial software UG, Then the "S" shape specimen is processed successfully on this novel five-axis machine tool prototype, which verifies the functionality of the developed CNC system.
