Due to Titanium alloy's high qualities, such as high strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature performance, it is widely used in aviation, aerospace, medical industry and other fields. But the characteristics of alloy makes difficult in machining. There is low efficient cutting rate, speeding of tool wear, unstable of part quality and etc. In the machining process, if the wrong material of tool or the false cutting parameters have been chosen, the surface of components would not be perfect, tool wear would be speeding up above the reasonable level, and unqualified product would be made. So it is important to study the mechanism and technology of TC4 cutting. The experiment has been designed to determine the effect of different tool materials in turning and milling process, such as non-coated, coated tools and PCBN tools. Cutting force, cutting temperature and tool life have been studied in the multi-factor experiments. The empirical formulae have been established to predict the process trend. What in more, the morphology of tool wear and the energy dispersive spectroscopy of tools have been observed. The pattern of tools wear was studied. Based on the facts of experiment result, reasonable cutting parameters and machining plan have been drawn up.Cutting tests showed that, cutting force of coated tools are lower than non-coated tools at the low speed thanks to the high hardness and good lubrication of coated tool. With the increasing of cutting speed, the cutting force increases because the paint-coat of tool has worn and fallen off. When the cutting speed reached at a certain value, different tool cutting forces are the same with or without coating. Tools wear is mainly dominated by adhesion wear, diffusion wear and oxidation wear. Due to the good lubricating effect, conduct for heat, the PCBN tools showed better corrosion resistance than coated and non-coated tools. Because of the impact of tool edge in the milling process the wear of tools is more common and easily broken. At lower speed, the durable of tool can increase 40?70% with the help of lubricant. But at higher speed, the effect of lubricant is not significant. In the machining experience, the different parameters have been determined according to the empirical formulae. The quality of TC4 material machining process has been improved.
