Today's world is still not that safety. War, rebellion, terrorism take place every day. As a way of causing massive damage, bomb attack is a threat to the people all around the world. It is necessary to study structures which can resist bomb attack and save lives. In this thesis, both experimental and numerical simulation studies were made to investigate energy absorption capability and the dynamic response of an aluminum sandwich panel with a re-entrant hexagonal auxetic core subject to air blast loading. The results showed that such re-entrant hexagonal auxetic core gave a special deformation pattern under air blast loading. The pattern showed advantages in energy absorption and gave the sandwich panel good blast resistance performance.Firstly, the meaning and background of the studies of blast resistance performance were explained. The studying progress of auxetic materials and Negative Poisson's Ratio (NPR) structures were summarized.Secondly, two re-entrant hexagonal auxetic core aluminum sandwich panel prototypes were hand crafted and filed tested. The field test results showed that under the air blast load from a spherical charge with a TNT equivalent of 0.3325 kg, the concrete slab protected by the sandwich panel showed no singe of damage, the sandwich panel showed good blast resistance performance.Thirdly, the numerical modelling methods will be validated using the test results of the panel. Two aspects were considered:deformation and energy.Fourthly, the dynamic response of the sandwich panel under air blast was fully investigated. Parameter studies were conducted to verify the influence of auxetic cell thickness to the blast resistance performance of the sandwich panel.
