In recent years, water pollution caused by heavy metals has become an increasingly serious environmental and health problem. Therefore, removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewaters has become a major research topic.Materials that have lower prices, lower toxicity nature, stronger adsorption ability for heavy metal ions caused great attention. In this paper, sulfonated modification cellulose and its novel application as adsorbent for removal of heavy metal ions in effluent were investigated.Sulfonated cellulose was characterized by FTIR,TGA,XRD,SEM and contact angle. The results showed that sulfonated cellulose have strong adsorbability for heavy metal ions and more than 85% of Pb2+,Fe3+ and 75% of Cu2+ can be removed at lower concentration?25 mg.L-1?.Its adsorbability for metal ions related with pH,temperature, initial metal ion concentration of effluent, adsorbent loading and react time.Adsorption process can reach equilibrium within 8 min, which can be well described as the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. In addition, the adsorption isotherm was closely fitted with the Temkin isotherm model, which suggested that the adsorption of Pb2+ on sulfonated cellulose can be regarded as chemical adsorption. Also, the adsorption process of Pb2+ on sulfonated cellulose was non-spontaneous and endothermic nature judged by Gibbs free energy and enthalpy. In multi-component adsorption experiments, the adsorbent could efficiently remove metal ions with selectivity in order of Fe3+,Pb2+ and Cu2+.The high selectivity adsorption of SC based on electrostatic affinity provided a novel pathway for metal separation and enrichment. The FTIR result of sulfonated cellulose before and after adsorption of metal ions shows that the chemical reaction between metal ions and sulfonate groups on SMC primarily account for adsorption. The desorption and regeneration performance showed that SMC can be easily regenerated by treated in acid or chelating liquors and reused for removal of metal ions in solution with multiple cycles.
