Ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) is one of the best barrier materials. This artical focused on EVOH functional modified in order to expand the range of application.1. Sulfonated EVOH were prepared by using 1,3-propane sultone as sulfonating agent, potassium carbonate as catalyst, dimethyl sulfoxide as solvent. The degree of sulfonation of sulfonated EVOH was estimated by nuclear magnetic resonance ('H-NMR) and the effect of sulfonating agent amounts (1,3-propane sultone) and dropwise way of 1,3-propane sultone on the sulfonating reaction was studied.2. Sulfonated EVOH have been crosslinked by glutaraldehyde, hexamethylene diamine, phosphoric acid and diethylene glycol diglycidyl ether to form membranes. The properties of the membranes were studied.3. Quaternized EVOH were prepared by using (2,3-epoxy propyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride as quaternization agent. The degree of quaternization has been estimated. The effect of reaction system, reaction temperature, amounts of catalyst and reaction time on the quaternization reaction was studied. The feasibility of microwave-assist and one-pot on preparing quaternized EVOH was explored. Finally, the propertis of quaternized EVOH membranes were studied.
