In this paper, titanium nitride coatings were prepared by plasma spraying technologies include atmospheric plasma spraying, nitrogen protection plasma spraying and vacuum plasma spraying methods respectively. The structure and composition of deposited coatings were studied by scanning electron microscope and X ray diffraction. Some physical and mechanical properties of coatings were determined, Tribological properties of the coatings were preliminarily explored,Some results obtained were described as follows:1. Atmospheric plasma spraying, nitrogen protection plasma spraying and vacuum plasma spraying technologies were used to prepare titanium nitride coatings on stainless steel substrates respectively. The coatings obtained showed uniform structure and good combination.Titanium nitride coatings prepared by atmospheric plasma spraying showed more dense microstructure, the lowest porosity and the highest deposition efficiency.2. Some physical and mechanical properties of atmospheric plasma sprayed titanium nitride coatings measurement results showed that the porosity of the coating is 1.8%, the surface roughness Ra is 5.1μm, the bonding strength is 39 MPa and micro hardness is 1270(HV0.5),which provides basic data and experimental basis for the application of wear resistance.3. Tribological behavior of titanium nitride coatings deposited on stainless steel substrate via atmospheric plasma spraying technique and vacuum plasma spraying technique and stainless steel ball were investigated. Study the sliding friction behavior at normal load of 20 N,40N and 50 N, the friction coefficient and the volume wear rate of titanium nitride coatingsprepared by APS were lower than Ti N coatings prepared by VPS, show that the atmospheric plasma spraying of titanium nitride coating has better wear resistance, also reflect the porosity rate has an important effect on the hardness of the coating, the microhardness of coating has great influence on the wear resistance of coating. The oxidation of titanium nitride coating during plasma spray has little effect on the microhardness and wear resistance of coating. The wear failure behavior is ploughing and fatigue failure, and the wear mechanism is mainly the wear of the tear film. The titanium nitride coating showed excellent wear resistance.
