China is the country of tea, and Chinese tea culture has a long history. The Chinese tea ceremony is a very important part of Chinese tea culture and is rich in national characteristics, as well as being the distillation of the humanistic spirit of the Han nationality. It is well worth promoting to people all over the world, including the Japanese people. For this thesis, interviews were conducted at the Confucius Institute at Kogakuin University, the Chinese Tea Association of Japan and SAN SI TANG in Chinese Hong Kong. Furthermore, it used questionnaires to conduct research at the Confucius College in Japan. Through the results of the research, it studies the current situation of the spread of the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan, and identifies the existing problems and future prospects of popularizing the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan. As well as using “the Five Ws method”, this thesis tries to analyze any problems with the popularization of the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan. The results are as follows: the main problems facing the popularization of the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan are that there is insufficient promotion of the Chinese tea ceremony, people in general do not hold a high opinion of the Chinese tea ceremony, and tea specialists and training institutions are few, among other issues. The thesis also found three positive elements for the spread of the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan: a) Japan already has the basic cultural environment to accept the Chinese tea ceremony; b) The Chinese tea ceremony is easier to master than the Japanese tea ceremony; c) The spirit of the Chinese tea ceremony accords well with the Japanese life. Japan still has enormous potential for the widespread propagation of the Chinese tea ceremony. Solving the problems facing such propagation will greatly facilitate the work of popularizing the Chinese tea ceremony. Therefore, the prospects of the Chinese tea ceremony in Japan are favorable. The Chinese tea ceremony may thus become an important vehicle to popularize Chinese culture in Japan.
